- What is mental illness?
- Just like a person can develop illnesses of the body, a person can develop illnesses of the brain that affect thoughts and behavior and interfere with normal living.
- What are hallucinations?
- Seeing and hearing things that do not exist are examples of hallucinations.
- What are delusions?
- Delusions are fixed false beliefs that cannot be changed by outside evidence.
- What is schizophrenia?
- Schizophrenia is a biological brain disease which impairs the ability to think rationally and relate well to others. Persons with schizophrenia may have hallucinations and delusions.
- What is a bipolar disorder or manic depression?
- This is a condition that causes severe mood changes, such as feeling sad, hopeless, suicidal or feeling overly active and restless. These symptoms are often so severe that they disrupt a person's life.
- What is a personality disorder?
- A life-long pattern of maladaptive behavior that results in significant legal, social, and/or work difficulties.
- What is depression?
- A condition in which a person feels sad and hopeless, often having problems with sleep, appetite, and sometimes thoughts of death or suicide.
- What is anxiety?
- A condition in which the person feels extremely nervous, afraid, or as if something terrible is about to happen.
- What is substance abuse?
- A common condition in which the person abuses alcohol or drugs. Continued abuse often results in addiction, severe life problems and sometimes death.
- What is ADHD?
- ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed behavior disorder in children. The core symptoms are inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity.
